Business Model

BioMar’s core business model is to develop, produce and deliver efficient and responsible feed solutions for high-value species to the global aquaculture industry.

Feed solutions are instrumental to the aquaculture value chain. It is the single most important factor in advancing farming of fish and shrimp in terms of sustainability, animal health, end-product quality and financial performance. It drives more than 50% of the farmers operational costs and constitutes 80% of the environmental impact.

The feed solutions of tomorrow support the integration of more sustainable raw materials, advanced farming methods, animal health and digital technologies, enabling the industry to growth while reducing our impact on people and planet. It is much more than the feed itself. It is precision feeding to meet the needs of the animals and the farming conditions.

Collaboration and partnerships across the value chain is a prerequisite for accelerating the future of seafood, promoting the most sustainable source of animal protein. With advanced feed solutions building ingredients into commercial solutions, it is possible to reduce environmental impact while producing healthy, great-tasting seafood.

At BioMar, we are committed to enabling our customers to grow in a sustainable way by developing and producing the feed solutions of tomorrow.

BioMar’s global footprint with deep local knowledge and proximity to key farming markets allows it to develop, market, and deploy targeted solutions for its customers with high level of agility. The Group’s well established local presence, formulation, production and advisory capabilities, combined with ability to effectively navigate complexities of the regulatory environment, deliver specific know-how rooted in continuous innovation, and brand authority earned over 60 years of operation, position BioMar as a differentiated industry leader and create tangible barriers to entry for potential new competitors.

The Group’s production facilities are complemented by sales offices and technology centres and are strategically located in proximity to most major high-value aquaculture markets, focusing on areas representing the high-value aquafeed market. This proximity, coupled with strong empowerment of local teams, enables efficient sourcing, manufacturing, sales, logistics, and post-sale support, contributing to agility of the overall platform.

BioMar’s competitive strengths lie in the combination of global scale, deep species-specific nutritional expertise and long-term customer relationships, supported by a strong commitment to continuous innovation.

With 60+ years of experience, BioMar delivers top-tier feed performance across species and growth stages. A multi-sourcing strategy and localised setup enable BioMar to ensure stable supply and fast, flexible service. BioMar leverages scale and a strong product portfolio to offer competitive pricing while ensuring performance and customer loyalty. Further, we
build long-term relationships through BioFarm, our expertise centre offering technical advice, customer analysis, and on-farm advisory enhancing the partnership model by deepening relationships and driving retention.

With strong R&D, BioMar leads in sustainable feed innovation, using ingredients like guarmeal and microalgae oil, reducing feed environmental footprint and supporting sustainable
farming.

The Group enjoys further benefits from operating a centralised procurement service without concentration or dependency on any single supplier within the different categories. The scale of purchasing, diversification of supplier base, long standing relationships and advanced purchasing ensure stability and transparency in the value chain.

BioMar’s position in the value chain, its diversification across species and geographies, and strong innovation and sustainability credentials allow it to stay at the forefront of the sector’s evolution from commodified feed to sophisticated solutions, resulting in greater visibility on earnings and stronger resilience

Our most significant customer relationships are deep and long-standing. BioMar serves approximately 1,400 customers, of which 82% have been retained for at least four years. The strong retention and recurrence are enabled by our agile partnership model and focus on Commercial Excellence and Operational Excellence.

The key elements of the partnership model are BioMar’s local presence within key production markets globally; our agile and empowered teams with capability and mandate to drive solutions locally while leveraging global expertise; its strong link to R&D functions and the use of data and technology for accelerated product development, all of which position BioMar to excel on both product and service proposition.

With more than 35 years of R&D, the Group’s R&D department is a key driver of innovation, functional nutrition and leadership in sustainability.

Our global R&D headquarter in Norway drives an ambitious product pipeline together with the three feed business segments for Salmon, Shrimp and Selected Species. The actual trials take place close to the major aquaculture markets.

Our R&D efforts focus on developing knowledge to enhance our capability of building biological models to support specific life stages, new ingredients, sustainability considerations, animal health, feed performance, flesh quality, physical properties, farming technologies and much more.

BioMar's state-of-art understanding of nutrients and other ingredients, enable us to continue augmenting our formulation matrix which guides every single product that leaves our premises.

Sustainability is deeply embedded within BioMar’s operations as a driver of its customer proposition, and as a way of doing business. With feed as the principal source of cost and value chain carbon footprint for farming customers, feed solutions are designed specifically to support our sustainability claims and targets.

BioMar sees sustainability as an increasingly important competitive differentiator contributing to higher feed profitability and customer retention, and has launched multiple commercial products, to serve sustainability-led customer demand. We work closely with end-distributors, such as retailers to continuously enhance the end-to-end sustainability positioning and therefore offer a comprehensive solution to its direct customers.

BioMar has an integrated sourcing, production and quality assurance to ensure optimal quality and performance. We build on base-level certifications at all production locations. In addition, we are certified under the new ASC Feed Standard for responsible aquaculture across all applicable markets. Depending on market requirement, we adapt our range of quality systems and certifications.
